The remainder of this chapter covers how to go about seeking medical evaluation and the best ways to obtain it.
All headaches fall into one of two classes: disease-related or benign. The natural drugless therapies in this book are for use exclusively with benign headaches. So before reading on, it’s important to make absolutely certain that your headaches really are benign. If your headaches are disease-related, you must seek medical advice and you should refrain from using any of the techniques in this book unless you have your physician’s specific approval.
If you have been experiencing tension or migraine headaches for years, and the symptoms are not worsening, there probably isn’t any urgent need for a medical checkup. A thorough evaluation by a headache clinic may cost $250-$500, and may be unnecessary for most people who suffer from a well-established pattern of chronic headaches. Only if symptoms are worsening, or if the pain is becoming unbearable and interfering with your work or family or social life, would you normally need to think about consulting a headache clinic.
However, if you have any reason to think that you may require medical treatment, you should see your doctor or arrange to visit a headache clinic without delay.
Likewise, if you have any anxiety about your health and your headaches, you should arrange for a medical examination. Preferably this should be at a headache clinic. Or failing that, at a pain clinic or by a doctor who is experienced in headaches.
